A. J. Liebling was an American journalist closely tied to The New Yorker from 1935 until his death in 1963. He is best known for The Sweet Science, a boxing collection that Sports Illustrated named the greatest sports book of all time, and for Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris, a book about French food. He also gave Chicago its nickname, "The Second City," and his writing kept returning to prizefighters, cigar store owners and political operators.
