Afua Cooper is a Jamaican-born Canadian historian and dub poet who has taught Caribbean cultural studies, history, women's studies and Black studies at Ryerson and York universities, the University of Toronto and Dalhousie University. As of 2018 she had published five volumes of poetry. Her historical fiction includes My Name Is Henry Bibb: A Story of Slavery and Freedom, which follows an enslaved man's escape and his later struggle to build a public voice, and My Name Is Phillis Wheatley: A Story of Slavery and Freedom.
