Alan Garner is an English novelist, born in 1934, best known for his children's fantasy and his retellings of British folk tales. Much of his work is rooted in Cheshire, where he grew up near the wooded area known as The Edge, and The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Owl Service draw on folklore in their plots. He later turned to the four-part Stone Book Quartet and to Cheshire-set novels such as Strandloper and Thursbitch, and his novel Treacle Walker is a coming-of-age story with magical realist touches.
