Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was a Soviet and Russian author and dissident who wrote about political repression, especially the Gulag prison system. He is best known for The Gulag Archipelago, a three-volume nonfiction work that sold tens of millions of copies, and for One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, his first novel, published in 1962. He also wrote Cancer Ward and In the First Circle, and he received the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature. Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia in 1994 and died there in 2008.
