Alex Garland is an English author and filmmaker who rose to prominence with his novel The Beach (1996), and whose books also include The Coma. He wrote the screenplays for Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and Sunshine before making his directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina (2014), which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He later directed Annihilation and Civil War, and he also wrote the FX miniseries Devs.
