Alexander Afanasyev's books gather Russian folk tales into two collections, one built around male heroes such as Ivan Tsarevich, the Grey Wolf and Koschei the Deathless, the other around women like Baba Yaga, Marya Morevna and Vasilisa the Wise. Both are classic fairy-tale fantasy in short-story form, and the first belongs to an illustrated series called Skazochnaya Rus.
