Alfred Bester was an American science fiction author who also wrote for television and radio, edited magazines, and scripted comics. Bester is best remembered for The Demolished Man, the first Hugo Award winner in 1953, and The Stars My Destination, about a salvager bent on revenge against those who ignored a distress call. The Science Fiction Writers of America named Bester its ninth Grand Master shortly before Bester died in 1987, and the honor was presented posthumously in 1988.
