Alfred Tennyson, later Lord Tennyson, was an English poet who served as Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom for much of Queen Victoria's reign. He is best known for short lyrics such as "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and "Crossing the Bar", and for longer works including Idylls of the King and "In Memoriam A.H.H.", written to mourn his friend Arthur Hallam. Much of his verse draws on classical myth, as in "Ulysses" and "The Lotos-Eaters", and his books here include Selected Poems and The Lady of Shalott.
