Ambrose Bierce was an American author, journalist, and poet, best known for An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and The Devil's Dictionary. His war stories shaped Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway, and Michael Dirda ranked his horror writing alongside Poe and Lovecraft. He also wrote A Lady From Red Horse and The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter. In 1913 he told reporters he was heading to Mexico to see the revolution, and he vanished there.
