Angela Carter is the pen name under which English novelist Angela Olive Pearce published. Carter wrote novels, short stories, poems and journalism, with feminist, magical realist and picaresque works. Her books include The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, a fantasy novel, and The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, a collection of short fiction. Her story "The Company of Wolves" became a film in 1984, The Times ranked Carter tenth in its 2008 list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945, and Nights at the Circus was named the best-ever winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2012.
