Anne Lamott is an American novelist and nonfiction writer, born in San Francisco in 1954 and based in Marin County, California. She writes autobiographical nonfiction such as Traveling Mercies and Bird by Bird, which address candidly alcoholism, single motherhood, depression, and Christianity, often with self-deprecating humor. She also writes novels, including Crooked Little Heart and Joe Jones, and has worked as a progressive political activist, public speaker, and writing teacher. Almost Everything: Notes on Hope is a book of essays on where hope comes from.
