Annie Dillard was an American writer best known for Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, a 1974 book about a year of close observation along a Virginia creek that won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Her work spans narrative prose in fiction and nonfiction, essays, poetry and literary criticism, and includes two novels; her other books include An American Childhood and The Writing Life. From 1980 Dillard taught for 21 years in the English department of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and died in 2026.
