Enoch Arnold Bennett (1867–1931) was an English novelist best known for books set in the Staffordshire Potteries, which he called The Five Towns. Anna of the Five Towns, The Old Wives' Tale, Clayhanger and Riceyman Steps are counted among his finest novels, and Clayhanger continues in Hilda Lessways. He also wrote plays and journalism, and was the most financially successful British author of his day.
