Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician, best known for the Sherlock Holmes stories, four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring the consulting detective and his companion Dr. Watson. He also wrote The Lost World, which introduced Professor Challenger and gave its name to a subgenre of speculative fiction, and humorous tales about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard. Born in Edinburgh, Doyle studied medicine there and served as a doctor on two sea voyages, experiences that fed his early stories.
