Atul Gawande is an American surgeon, writer, and public health researcher who practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is best known for books such as Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto, and Being Mortal, which looks at aging, dying, and what matters to patients near the end of life. Alongside his clinical work, he is a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and at Harvard Medical School, and he chairs Lifebox, a nonprofit working to make surgery safer worldwide.
