Audre Lorde (1934–1992) was an American poet, essayist and civil rights activist who also worked as a professor and philosopher. She is best known for poems that answer injustice with anger and exact, emotional language, as in The Black Unicorn, and for essays in Sister Outsider that examine sexism, racism and homophobia as linked forms of oppression. Her memoir Zami and The Cancer Journals also show her writing directly about her own life. She was a founding member of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press.
