Bama's Karukku is a coming-of-age work of literary fiction set in Tamil Nadu, following a Dalit narrator from childhood into convent life and looking hard at the caste humiliations along the way. Sangati turns to nonfiction, in the form of essays and social history. Between them, the two titles move from personal narrative to a wider look at society.
