Barry Lopez was an American essayist, nature writer, and fiction writer who wrote about the relationship between people and the natural world. He was best known for Arctic Dreams, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1986, and for Of Wolves and Men, a National Book Award finalist in 1978. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he visited more than 80 countries and wrote for magazines including Harper's Magazine, National Geographic, and The Paris Review. Lopez died in 2020.
