Bohumil Hrabal was a Czech novelist, often named among the best Czech writers of the twentieth century. He did not start publishing until after he turned forty, and his books include Closely Watched Trains, a wartime story set in a small railway town, along with I Served the King of England, Too Loud a Solitude and Little Town Where Time Stood Still. Hrabal lived from 1914 until his death in Prague in 1997.
