Bolesław Prus was the pen name of Aleksander Głowacki (1847–1912), a Polish journalist and novelist who took the name from his family's coat-of-arms. He worked as a journalist for about forty years, writing on science, technology, education and economic development, and wrote short stories on the side. He wrote The Doll, about a man of action frustrated by his country's backwardness, along with The Outpost, The New Woman, and Pharaoh, a political story set in ancient Egypt.
