Bruno Schulz (1892–1942) was a Polish-Jewish writer, literary critic, visual artist and art teacher who is regarded as one of the great 20th-century Polish-language prose stylists. His books include Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, a collection of dreamlike stories in which a son visits his ailing father at a strange sanatorium, and The Street of Crocodiles. In 1938 he received the Golden Laurel of the Polish Academy of Literature. He was shot dead by a Gestapo officer while carrying bread home in the Drohobycz Ghetto.
