Can Xue

Can Xue is the pen name of Deng Xiaohua, a Chinese avant-garde fiction writer and literary critic born in 1953. Her writing is mostly short fiction that breaks with the realism of earlier modern Chinese writers, and her books include Five Spice Street, I Live in the Slums, Old Floating Cloud, Love in the New Millennium and The Last Lover. Alongside her fiction she has written literary criticism of Dante, Jorge Luis Borges and Franz Kafka.
