Charles Bukowski was a German-American poet, novelist, and short story writer whose work drew on the ordinary lives of poor Americans, drinking, work, and the act of writing in his home city of Los Angeles. He was born in 1920 and died in 1994, and he wrote six novels and over sixty books, including the Henry Chinaski novels Post Office, Factotum, and Women. His column Notes of a Dirty Old Man ran in the underground newspaper Open City, and Time once called him a "laureate of American lowlife."
