Christopher Isherwood was an English and American novelist, playwright, screenwriter, autobiographer and diarist, born in 1904 and died in 1986. He was best known for Goodbye to Berlin (1939), a semi-autobiographical novel that was the basis for Cabaret (1966), and for A Single Man (1964), which Tom Ford adapted into a 2009 film. His memoir Christopher and His Kind (1976) carried him into the heart of the Gay Liberation movement, and his short-story collection The Berlin Stories belongs on the same shelf.
