Clarice Lispector was a Brazilian novelist and short story writer whose work explores intimacy, introspection and new narrative forms. She is best known for Near to the Wild Heart, her first novel, published when she was 23, and for The Hour of the Star. Born in Podolia and raised in Recife and Rio de Janeiro, she also wrote the stories of Family Ties and the novel The Passion According to G.H., and she kept writing and publishing until her death in 1977. Her other books include Água Viva and An Apprenticeship or the Book of Pleasures.
