Colm Tóibín is an Irish novelist, short story writer, essayist and critic, best known for novels including The South, Brooklyn and The Master, a fictionalised version of the inner life of Henry James that was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. His later work includes The Magician, a novel about Thomas Mann, and Long Island, the second novel about Eilis Lacey. He has also served as chancellor of the University of Liverpool and holds the Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professorship of the Humanities at Columbia University.
