Daniel Quinn (1935–2018) was an American novelist, fabulist, and cultural critic, and he also published educational texts. He is best known for Ishmael, a novel that won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship Award in 1991 and appeared the following year, along with its sequel, The Story of B. Beyond Civilization is his nonfiction follow-up to Ishmael, questioning whether civilization is humanity's only way to live. Though his ideas are often linked to environmentalism, he preferred the term new tribalism for his philosophy.
