Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989) was an English novelist, biographer and playwright who spent much of her life in Cornwall, where most of her works are set. She is best known for the novels Rebecca and Jamaica Inn, and for My Cousin Rachel, along with the short story "The Birds", which Alfred Hitchcock later filmed. Her grandfather, George du Maurier, was a writer and cartoonist, and her first novel, The Loving Spirit, appeared in 1931.
