Denis Diderot (1713–1784) was a French philosopher, art critic and writer, best known for co-founding and editing the Encyclopédie with Jean le Rond d'Alembert. His fiction includes the 1748 novel Les Bijoux indiscrets and Jacques the Fatalist, a work published only after his death. He also wrote plays and essays, and struggled financially for much of his career.
