Eça de Queirós is the pen name of José Maria de Eça de Queiroz, a Portuguese writer who lived from 1845 to 1900 and is generally considered the foremost Portuguese writer of the realist style. Under this name came The Crime of Father Amaro, a satire, and The Maias, a novel. Queirós also wrote Cousin Basilio, a domestic tale of adultery and blackmail set in nineteenth-century Lisbon, plus The Illustrious House of Ramires, The City and the Mountains, and The Relic.
