Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, best known for his poetry and for short stories about mystery and the macabre. His best-known works include the poem The Raven, along with stories such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Poe was one of the first successful American practitioners of the short story and is generally considered a pioneer of detective fiction. He died in Baltimore in 1849.
