Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American writer known for adventure, science fiction and fantasy, best remembered for Tarzan, who appeared in twenty-four of his books, and for the eleven John Carter books. He also wrote the Pellucidar series, the Amtor series and the Caspak trilogy. Born in Chicago in 1875, he began writing fiction in 1911 after years of low-wage work, and he died in 1950.
