Edith Wharton was an American novelist, short story writer and designer who drew on her knowledge of upper-class New York society to portray the Gilded Age. Her best-known books include The Age of Innocence, which won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and made her the first woman to win it, along with The House of Mirth and the novella Ethan Frome. She also wrote supernatural fiction such as Afterward, and she died in 1937.
