Edward Gorey (1925–2000) was an American writer and artist, noted for his own illustrated books as well as the covers and illustrations he made for other writers' books. He also won a Tony Award for his costume design. His pen-and-ink drawings, often set in Victorian and Edwardian times, carry a vaguely unsettling air. Amphigorey gathers his macabre short stories and poems, and The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a darkly satirical book.
