Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist whose spare, understated prose shaped much of twentieth-century fiction. He wrote The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls, and his novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 and died in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1961.
