Euripides was the last of the three great tragedians of classical Athens, after Aeschylus and Sophocles. Ancient scholars credited him with ninety-five plays, and eighteen or nineteen survive complete, including Medea and The Bacchae, in which a ruler refuses to acknowledge the god Dionysus. More of his work has survived than of Aeschylus and Sophocles combined, and fragments of most of the lost plays also remain.
