François Mauriac was a French novelist who also wrote plays, poetry, criticism and journalism, and he is best known for novels set in Bordeaux and the Landes region, such as Thérèse Desqueyroux and Genitrix. His fiction turns on sin, faith and divine grace, reflecting his fervent Catholic outlook. He was elected to the Académie française in 1933 and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1952.
