Frederick Douglass was an American abolitionist, orator, and writer who escaped from slavery in Maryland in 1838 and became a national leader of the antislavery movement. He was best known for his autobiographies, beginning with Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), followed by My Bondage and My Freedom (1855) and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. Later he campaigned for the rights of freed slaves and for women's suffrage. He died in 1895.
