G. K. Chesterton was an English writer and Christian apologist whose wit and paradox made him a dominant figure in early twentieth-century literature. He created the priest-detective Father Brown, and his essays Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man set out his defence of the Christian faith, which he came to identify with Catholicism. His novels include The Man Who Was Thursday, a nightmare about a detective who infiltrates an anarchist society, and The Napoleon of Notting Hill, a political satire. He died in 1936.
