Gabriel García Márquez was a Colombian writer and journalist who started out in journalism before becoming best known for his novels. His titles include One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985), some of them set in the fictional village of Macondo. He helped popularize magic realism, in which magical events unfold in otherwise ordinary surroundings, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. He died in 2014.
