Garry Wills is an American historian and political philosopher who writes on American history, politics, and religion, especially the history of the Catholic Church. He won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for Lincoln at Gettysburg and has reviewed for The New York Review of Books since 1973. His books include John Wayne's America: The Politics of Celebrity, which traces how Marion Morrison became the screen icon John Wayne. He taught at Northwestern University from 1980 and is now emeritus there.
