George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish author, poet and Congregational minister who became a pioneering figure in modern fantasy literature and mentored Lewis Carroll. He is best known for fairy tales such as The Princess and the Goblin, the first of the Curdie books, which follows a princess and a young miner as they face goblins living beneath the earth. His other fantasy works include Phantastes and Lilith, and he also wrote Christian theology and collections of sermons.
