George Meredith (1828–1909) was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era, who began with poetry, influenced by John Keats, before building his reputation on novels. His most enduring novel is The Egoist, while Diana of the Crossways was his greatest success in his lifetime, and The Ordeal of Richard Feverel briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles. His novels examined characters' psychology and social change, and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times.
