George R. Stewart

George R. Stewart (1895–1980) was an American historian, toponymist and novelist who taught English at the University of California, Berkeley. Earth Abides, a 1949 post-apocalyptic novel, won the first International Fantasy Award in 1951. Storm, also fiction, follows a huge storm that moves from the Pacific coast of California into the Sierra Nevada, burying the mountains in snow. The 1959 history Pickett's Charge covers the final attack at the Battle of Gettysburg.
