Georges Perec (1936–1982) was a French novelist, filmmaker, documentalist, and essayist and a member of the Oulipo group. His father died as a soldier early in the Second World War, and his mother was killed in the Holocaust; much of his work dealt with absence, loss, and identity, often through word play. His books include A Man Asleep, Life, a User's Manual, and Brief Notes on the Art and Manner of Arranging One's Books.
