Graciliano Ramos (1892–1953) was a Brazilian modernist writer, politician and journalist who wrote about the hard lives of poor people in the Brazilian sertão. His best-known novel is Barren Lives, which follows poverty-stricken country workers, and he also wrote São Bernardo, centered on the lust for power, and Anguish, a novel that deals with misogyny and infidelity. Childhood, his memoir, looks back on his early years. A lifelong supporter of communist ideas, he was affiliated with the original Brazilian Communist Party.
