Günter Grass (1927–2015) was a German novelist, poet and playwright, and he drew on his childhood in Danzig for much of his fiction. He was best known for The Tin Drum, published in 1959, the first book of the Danzig Trilogy, which also includes Cat and Mouse and Dog Years. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. The Flounder, a novel that follows a fisherman and a talking fish through the ages, is another of his books.
