Halldór Laxness (1902–1998) was an Icelandic writer who won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature. His books include Independent People, a novel about a farmer in rural Iceland, and Iceland's Bell, a historical novel. Over his career he wrote novels, poetry, plays, essays, travelogues and short stories, and his other titles include The Fish Can Sing and The Great Weaver from Kashmir.
