Henry Miller was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist who wrote semi-autobiographical novels blending personal experience with social criticism, philosophical reflection and free association. His most characteristic books, Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring and Tropic of Capricorn, draw on his years in New York and Paris, and were banned in the United States until 1961. Miller also wrote travel memoirs, literary criticism and Sexus, and painted watercolors. He died in 1980.
