Hermann Hesse

Hermann Hesse was a German-Swiss poet and novelist who won the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature. His interest in Eastern philosophy and Jungian analysis shaped novels such as Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each about a person searching for self-knowledge. He also wrote Beneath the Wheel, a coming-of-age story about a gifted student. His work reached large audiences in the United States and Europe in the mid-1960s, after his death in 1962.
